Background
The University Human Tissue Tracker is a web application and data store to assist the process of recording and tracking human tissue samples. The tool is born out of the need to comply with the UK's Human Tissue Act 2004.
Target audience
The Human Tissue Tracker can be used by any registered Lab or Institution in the University.
Labs are often managing their tissue sample records in spreadsheets which provide great flexibility for one person to design and manage their data. As the quantity of data and collaborators expands, lab data managers begin to hit the limits of spreadsheets.
When looking for a new tool to manage tissue sample data, the top issues that lab managers are looking to solve are:
- Collaboration and parallel working
- Data format, structure and consistency
- Legislative and managerial compliance
- Backup and reliability.
The Human Tissue Tracker can assist solving those issues but is still a young application and may or may not provide all of the features required by a Lab. A consultation, trial period and evaluation will be necessary before real world use to establish suitability and if any changes to working practices are required.
